Hey Indonesia lovers … There’s always something more you can find about Indonesia. As you know Indonesia has many islands, languages, and cultures. Every island and tribe has their own cultures. One of famous cultures in Indonesia is dances.

In my previous post I already talked about Indonesia Tourism Object, Bali. So, if you ever visit Bali then you must have seen its traditional clothes, ceremony, or dances. In Bali there’s a very famous dance called “Kecak Dance” .

Kecak Dance is one of the most famous traditional art in Bali. The dance depicts the story of Pewayangan, it is a story of Ramayana which is performed with the art of motion and dance. In addition to the cultural heritage, Kecak Dance is also one of the tourists attractions in Bali.

According to historical sources, this Kecak Dance was created in 1930 by Balinese artist Wayan Limbak and Walter Spies, a German painter. This dance is inspired by Sanghyang rituals and parts of the Ramayana story. Sanghyang ritual itself is a dance tradition where the dancers are in an unconscious condition and they can communicate with God or the spirits of the ancestors, then convey his hopes to the community.

Kecak is a sacred dance. Therefore, before the Kecak dance performance begins, there will be a stakeholder (a Hindu priest) leading a prayer and pray for the sake of common safety. Kecak Bali dance is a dramatic played by 50 people, up to 150 dancers.

The show held every day, starting from 6 p.m on the open stage. The  audiences have their seat higher than the stage, so they can see the whole stage and performance better. The price of the ticket is about IDR. 100.000.

The location of the most famous Kecak dance performance in Bali is located at Pura Luhur Uluwatu, one of Bali’s most popular tourist attractions.

When You Watch Kecak dance?

If you want to watch Kecak dance, you should come early and book the tickets first. Before watching the Kecak dance at Uluwatu temple, you can also enjoy the beautiful view of the southern sea as well as the sunset scenery around Pura Luhur Uluwatu area.

If you look down, then you will see that Luhur Uluwatu temple is built on a high cliff with a stretch of Indian ocean. This what makes the atmosphere of Kecak Dance in Uluwatu temple more exciting towards the evening.

Kecak Dance name itself is taken the word "cak .. cak .. cak" which is shouted by the members who surround the dancers, so this dance is known by the name of Kecak Dance.
